What is Ayurveda?
Ancient wisdom for modern healing and whole person well-being.
Ayurveda is an ancient, holistic system of medicine that teaches us how to live in alignment with our unique nature. Rooted in over 5,000 years of tradition, Ayurveda guides us to care for the body, mind, and spirit so we can feel nourished, resilient, and well. It honors what makes each of us unique, while offering timeless tools to restore balance in a world that often pulls us out of rhythm.
What I love most about Ayurveda is that it blends beautifully with modern life. While it draws from deep traditional knowledge, its core principles––daily routine, digestion, nervous system regulation, seasonal living, and emotional wellbeing––are now strongly supported by emerging research in integrative and lifestyle medicine. Ayurveda reminds us that true healing isn’t about restriction or perfection. It’s about coming home to ourselves, one nourishing choice at a time.
The Essence of Ayurveda
The word Ayurveda comes from Sanskrit:
”Ayur” meaning life and “Veda” meaning
knowledge or science.
Together, it translates to “the science of life.”
Ayurveda is a personalized approach to health. Instead of treating symptoms alone, it looks at the root cause of imbalance––physical, emotional, mental, or energetic––and offers gentle, practical ways to restore harmony. It teaches that health is not simply the absence of illness, but a state of vitality, clarity, and connection to self.
A Mind-Body-Spirit Approach to Wellbeing
Ayurveda recognizes that our thoughts, emotions, lifestyle, environment, and nutrition are all interconnected. Your digestion, stress levels, sleep patterns, hormones, immune system, and mood are part of a single, intelligent system.
Modern science now supports many of these foundational teachings:
Gut-brain connection: Our digestion and microbiome directly affect mood, immunity, and mental health.
Nervous system health: Mindful routines and breathwork support parasympathetic (rest-digest-repair) function.
Circadian biology: Aligning daily habits with natural rhythms improves metabolism, energy, hormones, and sleep.
Ayurveda has known this for thousands of years: when we live in rhythm with nature, balance becomes our baseline––not our struggle.
Understanding the Doshas
Ayurveda teaches that we are all born with a unique constitution, like our DNA, known as Prakruti. This is often described through the three doshas, or mind-body energies:
Vata
Elements
Air
& Space
Qualities
Cool, dry,
light, quick, creative
In Balance
Inspired, clear,
flexible, energized
Out of Balance
Anxiety, dryness,
overwhelm, restlessness
Pitta
Elements
Fire
& Water
Qualities
Warm, bright, sharp, driven, focused
In Balance
Motivated, confident,
strong digestion
Out of Balance
Irritability, inflammation,
perfectionism, acidity
Kapha
Elements
Earth
& Water
Qualities
Cool, stable,
soft, gentle, nurturing
In Balance
Calm, grounded, loving,
strong immunity
Out of Balance
Sluggishness, heaviness, congestion, emotional stagnation
Most of us are a blend of two doshas, and they shift with stress, seasons, life stages, and habits. Ayurveda helps us rebalance gently—through food, lifestyle, and daily care rituals.

Why Ayurveda Matters Today
We live in a world that moves quickly, demands constant productivity, and often leaves us feeling depleted. Many women I meet are exhausted, overwhelmed, inflamed, anxious, or disconnected from their bodies—and they think this is “normal.”
It’s not your fault.
We weren’t designed for a life that ignores rest, intuition, nourishment, or inner rhythm.
Ayurveda gives you permission to slow down, reconnect, and rebuild your health with compassion and intention—not pressure or perfection.
-
No. Ayurveda is a holistic medical system, not a religion. It can complement any spiritual or religious belief system.
-
Western medicine often focuses on symptom management and acute care (which can be life-saving and necessary). Ayurveda focuses on prevention, root-cause healing, and long-term balance. Together, they form a powerful integrative approach.
-
The doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—are mind-body energies that help us understand our natural tendencies and where imbalance may occur. Knowing your dosha (and which dosha(s) are imbalanced) helps you choose foods, routines, and habits that support your unique biology.
-
No. While Ayurveda values plant-forward nourishment, it also recognizes that animal products can be medicinal and supportive for certain people and conditions. I take a personalized approach and meet you where you are.
-
Yes, when practiced responsibly. Ayurveda can safely complement Western medicine. If you take medication or have a medical condition, your care plan will be adapted to ensure safety and alignment with your healthcare team.
-
Some people notice changes within days or weeks. For deeper, long-standing imbalances, gradual improvements unfold over months. Ayurveda focuses on sustainable healing, not quick fixes.
-
Absolutely. Ayurveda is most effective when it feels doable. Small, consistent changes make the biggest impact. I will always help you adapt recommendations to your lifestyle and capacity.

-
Yes. Research continues to grow in areas such as herbal medicine, gut-brain health, circadian biology, meditation, breathwork, yoga, and mind-body approaches—all core elements of Ayurveda. I integrate traditional wisdom with modern evidence-based understanding.
-
They are sister sciences. Yoga primarily focuses on spiritual and physical practices, while Ayurveda focuses on health and lifestyle—but they beautifully complement one another.
